A six-week course in the theory and poetics of personal and experimental cinema, taught live by Rouzbeh Rashidi over six consecutive Sundays via Zoom.
Spring 2027 edition — 21 and 28 February, 7, 14, 21 and 28 March 2027, 18:00–20:00 Berlin time. Every session is recorded and issued as a private link. Each recording is available for one week after its session and is then permanently deleted, for data protection — if you miss a session live, you have seven days to watch it. You may attend live, watch the recordings, or move between the two.
Every student also receives the Companion Films — Phantom Islands, Trailers and Homo Sapiens Project (200) — to download and keep.
Description
Theories of Personal Experimental Filmmaking is an entirely theoretical and philosophical study, offering an exploration of the rich history of alternative film and video, a diverse range of artist practices, and deeply personalised methodologies. It is not a course in technique. It delves instead into poetics, philosophy, and intuitive mental strategy, and it equips you with the mental and poetic knowledge required to embark on your own subjective journey toward a distinct experimental film practice.
The Spring 2027 edition
Six consecutive Sundays, 18:00–20:00 Berlin time: 21 February · 28 February · 7 March · 14 March · 21 March · 28 March 2027. The Zoom room opens fifteen minutes beforehand, and one link serves all six sessions.
Attending
You may attend the live sessions, watch the recordings, or move between the two — participants have always done both. Each session is recorded and issued as a private link within twenty-four hours. Each recording is available for one week after its session, and is then permanently deleted. Please read that literally, because it governs what you are buying: if you miss a live session you have seven days to watch it, and after that the link is gone and cannot be reissued. The deletion is deliberate and it is a matter of data protection — the sessions carry the faces, voices, names and personal work of your fellow participants, and that material is not left in circulation. Nothing from this course remains available after 4 April 2027.
Two clock changes fall inside the course — North American clocks move forward on 14 March and European clocks on 28 March — so local starting times shift for sessions four, five and six outside Europe. The full table of local times is given on the course page. For Australia and New Zealand the live sessions fall in the early hours of Monday morning; the course remains entirely workable there, but it will be taken through the recordings.
Tuition
€280 for enrolments completed by 31 January 2027; €350 thereafter. A single, one-time payment. Instalments are available with Klarna at checkout.
If the fee is the barrier
Four places on every edition are held at €175 for anyone for whom the full fee would decide the matter. There is no form and no means test. Write to info@efsfilmschool.com and say so plainly; the place is yours while any of the four remain.
Practical
